If you know Japanese cinema, you know of a sub-genre characterized by buckets of blood. If you know buckets of blood, you’ve seen the film Battle Royale by Kinji Fukasaku. The whimsical tale of young students forced to fight to the death on a secret island. At the mercy of an insane script reminiscent of Lord of the Flies, the students participate in this deathmatch while their backstory/persona unfolds in dramatic brutality. I’m not personally into the whole Japanese horror gore film scene, but this classic is a must watch, even if you only make it 2 minutes in where you witness the sly grimmace of the previous winner.
